50 - MANUFACTURING COMPANIES

Starting in 2024, Canadian manufacturing companies will continue to feel the effects of labor shortages: 47.4% of Canadian manufacturing companies will have difficulty finding qualified workers.

Shortages are responsible for many employment trends in the manufacturing sector: 85% of manufacturers are struggling to fill vacancies.

Labor shortages have been identified in many manufacturing industries, including:

  • Car industry
  • natural resources
  • Food industry
  • Aerospace industry
  • Machines and equipment

The shortage of skilled labor in the Canadian manufacturing industry is due to several factors, but one of the main ones is the aging workforce.
The average manufacturing worker is much older than the average Canadian worker. In fact, 22% of these workers are 55 years old or older. This statistic means that more than a fifth of the country's manufacturing workers are approaching retirement.
Employers must find ways to address the current labor shortage and retirement rates in the manufacturing industry.
In 2024, Canadian manufacturers will focus on recruiting and retaining entry-level workers.
